Raccoon

I saw this raccoon about twilight last night.  He was walking the top of our neighbor's wall.

Prior to this year, I had not seen a raccoon in Pasadena.  I know they live here, I just had not seen one.

Late last Thursday, about 10:15 or so I was watering the plants at the front of our yard. While I was up at the easement, I felt something staring at me. I turned around and there were two raccoons, still for the moment. One began to give me a version of raccoon stink eye, so stayed still. After about a minute I decided they needed to learn our front yard was not a welcoming place. So I squirted them. Amazing the speed they can reach. Haven't seen them since, but then I've not been watering at night over the last few days.

My husband sees them all the time because he works in his office at home late at night. I hear them in the leaves outside our bedroom window, but I've never seen one.

Raccoons are a chickens worst nightmare! I had a raccoon hollow out a young hen from the rear (yep, it was just a shell) through the cage!

Hmm--we have raccoons on & off all the time! (They come in spurts--none for months & then we see them for days on end) They have learned to come in the cat door, and try to open my (re-used popcorn tin of) cat food. Threw it down the stairs, until I bungeed it to the cabinet handle. Another family made frequent use of the pool in the heat..the mom would practically push the babies in to make them drink, then plop herself down on the top step--ahhhh! My cats ignore them & the raccoons usually stop to "listen" if you talk to them like you would a pet. I had one come back up the steps & put her paw on my toes once, when I told her we wouldn't hurt her but really didn't want her in the house. So sorry to hear about your hen, though, Eric.
