Blood Orange

Blood oranges are my current citrus favorite. I think I ate most of the fruit our small tree produced this year.

There is an East Pasadena connection to the blood orange. Abbot Kinney, who spent his first night here sleeping on the pool table of the Sierra Madre Villa Hotel, was known throughout the state for the blood oranges grown at his Kinneloa Ranch.

I like blood oranges. Not so much the name. Dunno which is my fav citrus but have you tried the rare Mango orange?

Mango orange sounds good, but I'd be concerned about the seed. Noone really likes the blood orange name, but it makes a good headline. About the name -- I read that when they were first introduced out in Riverside County, they called these "citrus tomatoes".

Are there any still grown locally? I love them, blood and all.

You know, outside of backyards, I don't know whether blood oranges are still grown around here. That's a good question. I wonder if they sell them at the farmers' market.

I was very excited to see blood oranges at the Farmer's Market so I bought lots - and you're right, they're very sweet and delicious.

The AK connection. That have been before the whole citrus industry took off. Interesting
