Excitement all over the house. We have an egg! When I went out this morning to check the chickens, this is what I found. The egg has been passed around and we've all held it. We don't know which of the hens is responsible for the egg, but they all got rewarded with tomatoes, which they love. For several weeks we have been checking for eggs - sometimes many times a day. A week ago someone suggested placing a golf ball in the nesting box. I guess the notion is that the ball would give the chickens an idea of what they were supposed to be doing. Well, they got their golf ball and we got an egg!
It was mid June when we got six one-day old chicks. Now about five and one-half months later we have an egg!

Congratulations! Good to know the golf ball trick works. I think we've got a couple of months yet...
One question. Is this on the up and up? I have a neighbor two doors down from me that got turned in to the city by some busybody for having a few chickens. The city made the neighbors get rid of them. Has something changed?
The wonder of a simple egg...
That's great! When I lived in Altadena, I had about six chickens, and named them all. The excitement of that first egg was like Christmas morning! After a few months, I had more eggs than I could handle. The two leghorns were producing 2 eggs each per day!The rhode island reds gave me one brown egg each while the black minorcas produced green eggs. Very cool.
I too lost my chickens--one by one and never replaced them.

Don't throw away the shells..it's good for egging or decorations..
I bet it was like Christmas morning! I would love to have a few chickens but my husband is very against the idea.
